Groin Pull from Running: What to Know

Short answer
A groin pull from running is commonly an adductor muscle strain caused by sudden loading, overstride, fatigue or a change in training.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Commonly involved area
- Inner-thigh adductor muscles
- Typical trigger
- Sudden or increased running load
- Useful next step
- Relative rest followed by graded rehabilitation
What a running-related groin pull means
The adductors help draw the leg towards the body and steady the pelvis. Pain may start during a sprint, hill, sharp turn or forceful stride, or appear later as soreness on the inner thigh. Walking, climbing stairs, crossing the legs and squeezing the knees together can reproduce it. Bruising, swelling or weakness can occur with a more substantial injury. Similar groin pain can also come from the hip, abdominal wall or another pelvic problem, so location and movement patterns matter.
What to do next
Pause running and movements that clearly increase pain, while keeping gentle daily movement within comfort. In the early phase, a wrapped cold pack may ease discomfort; avoid placing ice directly on skin. Do not force a deep stretch or return to sprinting because the pain has briefly settled. A clinician or physiotherapist can assess strength, hip motion and running demands, then build gradual Exercise Therapy.
Progression commonly moves from comfortable walking to controlled strengthening, jogging and sport-specific drills. Sports Physiotherapy or a Return-to-Sport Programme can help match the steps to your activity.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if you cannot walk normally, felt a sudden snap, have marked bruising or swelling, or notice clear weakness. Seek prompt medical care for severe pain after a fall or collision, a visible bulge, numbness, fever, or groin pain with abdominal or testicular symptoms. If symptoms are not steadily improving with sensible activity changes, get examined rather than repeatedly testing the injury.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which structure is injured, which activities are safe today, how strength will be measured, and what movement should be comfortable before running resumes.

Questions people ask
Can I run through a groin pull?
Continuing through sharp or increasing pain can prolong irritation. Use comfortable walking as a guide and return through graded loading.
Should I stretch a pulled groin?
Gentle movement may be suitable, but forceful stretching early on can aggravate the injured tissue. A clinician can set the right range.
