Green mucus discharge from the eye

Mucus becomes green or yellow when inflammatory material mixes with tears. This can happen with conjunctival infection, but irritation, allergy, and poor tear drainage may look similar. Redness, swollen lids, gritty discomfort, and eyelids stuck together on waking can accompany [Eye Discharge](/symptoms/eye-discharge/). Wash your hands before and after eye care. Soften crusts with clean cotton or a clean cloth dampened with cooled boiled water, wiping from the inner corner outward and using a fresh section each time. Avoid rubbing, contact lenses, and eye makeup while discharge continues. Do not share towels or pillows, and do not use old prescription drops. A clinician can decide whether supportive care, allergy treatment, or prescribed medicine fits the findings.

Seek urgent assessment for significant eye pain, sensitivity to light, blurred or reduced vision, injury, or pronounced swelling. Contact-lens wearers should obtain prompt advice because corneal infections can progress quickly. Arrange a review if discharge persists, returns repeatedly, or affects a newborn. Sudden vision change or severe pain warrants emergency help rather than home cleaning alone.
