Green discharge from the eye: treatment and next steps

Thick green or yellow discharge often reflects inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin surface covering the eye. Bacterial infection is one possibility, while viruses, irritation, or blocked tear drainage can produce similar symptoms. It may cause sticky eyelids, redness, watering, or a gritty feeling. Clean crusts gently with clean cotton and cooled boiled water, using a fresh piece for each wipe and each eye. Wash hands before and after touching the area, do not share towels, and avoid contact lenses and eye makeup until the eye is comfortable and a clinician advises they are safe. Arrange prompt assessment for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling, injury, or symptoms in a contact-lens wearer. Seek urgent help if vision changes suddenly or pain is severe. Also seek advice if discharge is worsening, the eye cannot open, or symptoms are not improving. These features can point beyond uncomplicated conjunctival irritation and need an examination.
