What should you know about gray hair breakage?

Short answer
Gray hair breakage means strands are snapping along the shaft, often after dryness or damage, while the scalp and follicles may remain intact.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why gray strands may snap
A broken strand is shorter than the surrounding hair and may have a frayed or split end. Gray hair can feel coarse or less flexible, and repeated colouring, bleaching, straightening, curling, hot tools, tight hairstyles, rough brushing, or rubbing against fabric can weaken the shaft. Breakage is different from shedding: a shed hair usually has its full length, while a snapped hair does not. Itching, scale, bald patches, or hairs breaking close to the scalp suggest that a scalp condition may also be present.
Protect the hair shaft
Pause bleaching and reduce chemical processing while the hair recovers. Use conditioner after washing, detangle from the ends upward with a wide-toothed comb, and blot rather than rub with a towel. Keep heat low, use a heat protectant, and avoid tight braids, extensions, or repeated pulling on the same areas. A small trim can remove split ends, but it will not change new growth from the follicle. If breakage continues despite gentler care, arrange a scalp and hair assessment.
When to seek medical advice
See a dermatologist for sudden widespread breakage, patchy loss, scalp pain, inflammation, heavy scale, sores, or broken hairs with itching. Scalp ringworm can cause scaling and fragile hairs, while traction alopecia can follow ongoing pulling; both need targeted care. Seek prompt assessment if eyebrow or eyelash hair changes too, or if hair loss accompanies fatigue, weight change, or other new symptoms.
Questions for your doctor
Is this shaft breakage, shedding, or a scalp disorder? Could colouring, heat, tension, or a condition such as scalp ringworm or traction alopecia be contributing? Do I need an examination or testing? Which routine is safest for my texture and new growth?

Questions people ask
Does gray hair breakage mean the follicles are damaged?
Not necessarily. Breakage occurs along the visible shaft; a scalp examination can check whether follicles or skin are also affected.
Can cutting the ends stop gray hair from breaking?
Trimming removes existing split ends, but ongoing heat, chemicals, friction, or tension must also be reduced to limit further snapping.
