Short answer

Graston myofascial release is an instrument-assisted soft-tissue technique used to address restricted movement and muscle or fascial discomfort.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means

During treatment, a trained clinician uses a smooth handheld instrument over selected areas of the skin and underlying soft tissue. The aim is to assess and work on areas that feel sensitive, tight, or less mobile, while combining the technique with movement or hands-on care. It is often discussed for problems such as back muscle spasm, upper back pain, or myofascial pain syndrome, but the appropriate target depends on an individual examination.

Mild tenderness or temporary skin marking can occur after some sessions. The treatment should be adjusted if pressure causes sharp pain, unusual numbness, or symptoms that continue to worsen.

What you can do

Before treatment, tell the clinician about bruising easily, medicines that affect bleeding, skin conditions, recent injury, surgery, infection, or altered sensation. A useful plan usually includes active movement, gradual strengthening, posture or workload changes, and advice for managing flare-ups rather than relying on an instrument alone. Ask what improvement will be tracked and when the plan should be reconsidered.

Hydration and ordinary activity may be discussed, but there is no need to force painful stretching after a session. Follow the clinician's instructions for returning to sport, lifting, or repetitive work.

When to seek care

Stop and seek medical advice if treatment is followed by severe or escalating pain, spreading redness, significant swelling, fever, new weakness, or persistent numbness. Back pain with loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, or major leg weakness requires urgent assessment. These signs need evaluation rather than repeated soft-tissue treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what diagnosis is being treated, why this technique is suitable, which alternatives are available, how pressure will be controlled, and what exercises should accompany the sessions.

Questions people ask

Is Graston myofascial release the same as massage?

No. It uses a handheld instrument and is commonly combined with assessment, movement, and exercise; massage uses hands and may have a different purpose.

Should treatment hurt?

Pressure can feel uncomfortable, but sharp or escalating pain is a reason to tell the clinician and pause for reassessment.
