What should you know about granulomatous mastitis with abscess formation?

An abscess can feel like a tender lump and may cause warmth, redness, swelling, or throbbing pain. It can sometimes drain through the skin. With granulomatous mastitis, inflammation can continue around the collection, so symptoms may not behave like a brief episode of uncomplicated mastitis.

Ultrasound is often used to examine a suspected collection, while sampling or drainage may help clarify what is inside it. Bacterial infection can occur alongside inflammatory disease, and the care team may use fluid testing to guide treatment.

Arrange prompt assessment rather than trying to open or squeeze the lump yourself. Treatment may include a procedure to drain the collection, medicine directed at infection when indicated, anti-inflammatory treatment, and follow-up to check for recurrence or a remaining cavity.

Wear supportive clothing and use only pain relief that is suitable for you. If breastfeeding, ask how to protect milk supply and whether feeding or expressing from the affected side is appropriate. A lactation consultation can provide practical support.

Seek urgent care for fever with shaking chills, rapidly spreading redness, severe or escalating pain, confusion, faintness, or feeling markedly unwell. Get prompt review if drainage becomes foul-smelling, the skin turns dusky, or a wound is enlarging. An abscess may need timely drainage even when pain temporarily eases.

Ask whether imaging confirms a collection, whether fluid will be tested, what drainage method is suitable, and how the wound will be dressed. Discuss signs of recurrence, breastfeeding arrangements, pain control, and the date of follow-up.
