Gram-negative mastitis

Mastitis can cause a tender, warm, swollen area of breast tissue, sometimes with fever or feeling unwell. Gram-negative bacteria have a cell structure that can affect which antibiotics are useful. A clinician may consider breastfeeding history, recent antibiotics, skin damage, and whether an abscess is possible. Symptoms can overlap with non-infectious inflammation, so the label should not be assigned from breast pain alone.

Contact a healthcare professional for an examination, especially if symptoms are worsening or you feel ill. Continue breastfeeding or expressing if comfortable and follow an infant-feeding plan; abrupt stopping can increase breast fullness. Rest, drink fluids, and use a cool pack for comfort. Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed, and do not use leftover medicine. A Lactation Consultation can help review latch, milk removal, and breast comfort.

Seek urgent care for high fever, confusion, faintness, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, or a soft swelling that may suggest an abscess. Reassessment is needed if symptoms do not begin improving after treatment or return soon afterwards.

Ask whether a culture, ultrasound, or different antibiotic is needed, whether it is safe to breastfeed with the prescribed medicine, and how soon you should be reviewed.
