What should you know about grafted fish skin?

Fish-skin graft material is prepared for medical use and placed over a wound after the area has been assessed and cleaned. It can act as a temporary protective layer and provide a structure that supports the wound environment while new tissue develops. It is different from a permanent replacement of the patient’s own skin.

Suitability depends on wound depth, blood supply, infection, location, drainage and the person’s general health. Some wounds need debridement, pressure relief, dressings or treatment of an underlying condition before graft material is considered.

Keep the dressing in place as instructed and attend planned wound reviews. Do not pull away material, soak the site or apply creams beneath the dressing unless the wound team approves it. Protect the area from friction and follow instructions about movement, footwear or pressure.

Tell the wound team about increasing drainage, odour, fever, new allergies, uncontrolled pain or trouble keeping the dressing secure. Healing is influenced by circulation, nutrition, smoking, blood sugar and infection control, so these factors should be discussed openly.

Contact the wound team promptly for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, foul odour, wound separation or pain that is getting worse. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, fever with confusion or faintness, or a sudden change in colour or sensation below the wound.
