What should you know about gout pseudogout crystals?

Gout is linked with monosodium urate crystals, which form when urate accumulates. Pseudogout, also called calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, involves calcium pyrophosphate crystals. Both can activate inflammation inside a joint, leading to sudden pain, heat, redness and swelling.

The appearance of a flare does not reliably identify the crystal type. Gout often affects the big toe but can involve the ankle or knee. Pseudogout commonly affects larger joints, including the knee or wrist, though other sites are possible. Age, joint changes and other health factors may influence risk, but symptoms overlap substantially.

For a newly hot or swollen joint, arrange an assessment. A clinician may use examination and imaging, but a joint aspiration can provide fluid for crystal analysis and help check for infection. This distinction matters because treatments that lower urate do not remove calcium pyrophosphate crystals.

Treatment is chosen around the diagnosis, the number of joints involved, kidney function, stomach health and other medicines. Options may include anti-inflammatory medication or, in selected situations, a cortisone injection. Use only treatment recommended for you and do not share leftover medicines.

Get urgent medical help if swelling comes with fever, chills, confusion, severe weakness or rapidly worsening pain. A joint infection can resemble either crystal arthritis and needs prompt treatment. Seek review for a first attack, an injury followed by swelling or symptoms that do not settle as expected.
