What should you know about gout pain?

Short answer
Gout pain comes from urate-crystal inflammation and may be sudden and severe, so a new painful swollen joint deserves assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Pain source
- Inflammation caused by urate crystals in or around a joint.
- Associated changes
- Warmth, redness, swelling, and extreme tenderness may occur.
- Useful record
- Write down onset, joint location, medicines, and changes in walking.
Why gout hurts
When urate crystals irritate a joint, the immune system creates inflammation. Pain may be throbbing, burning, or sharply tender, with warmth, redness, and swelling. It can make walking, bending a knee, or tolerating a sock difficult. Gout can affect the toe, foot, ankle, knee, or another joint, while injuries and infections can produce similar pain. A clinician considers the timing, appearance, examination, medical history, and sometimes blood or joint-fluid tests before confirming the cause.
Easing symptoms safely
Rest the painful joint and avoid activities that increase pressure. Elevate the limb, keep clothing and bedding loose, and try a cool pack wrapped in fabric for short intervals. Use prescribed flare treatment according to the instructions. Before taking an anti-inflammatory or other pain medicine, check that it fits your kidney function, stomach history, heart health, pregnancy status, and current medicines. Do not use leftover prescriptions from another person. Note the pain score in words, the joint involved, and whether redness or swelling is changing.
Pain that should not wait
Get prompt medical advice for a first suspected attack, pain that is severe or worsening, or difficulty bearing weight. Seek urgent help if fever, chills, spreading redness, pus, a nearby wound, confusion, or marked weakness accompanies the joint pain. These signs may indicate infection or another urgent condition. Book follow-up when attacks recur or pain persists after the flare should have settled.
Questions to bring
Ask how gout will be distinguished from injury or infection, which pain treatment is safest for you, and what to do at the earliest sign of another flare. Discuss prevention if painful attacks keep returning.
