What should you know about gout leg pain?

A gout flare can make one joint feel intensely tender, warm, red, and swollen. The big toe is common, but gout can also affect the ankle, knee, or other joints in the leg. Pain may make walking, bending the knee, or placing weight on the foot difficult. A painful leg joint has many possible causes, so the symptom alone cannot confirm gout. A clinician may consider your examination, medical history, urate testing, and sometimes fluid from the joint.

Chronic kidney disease can affect urate removal, while obesity may be associated with a higher risk of gout. These links do not mean either condition proves that a painful leg is gout.

Rest the painful joint, raise the limb when practical, and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods. Drink fluids unless a clinician has given you a fluid restriction. Take prescribed flare medicine exactly as directed; do not start, stop, or change long-term urate-lowering treatment without advice. Note which joint hurts, when it began, whether the skin is hot or red, and any recent illness or injury.

Seek urgent medical assessment for a hot, swollen joint with fever, chills, feeling faint, rapidly worsening pain, or inability to move the limb, because infection and other urgent problems can resemble gout. Arrange a prompt appointment if this is your first episode, the pain keeps returning, or treatment is not helping.
