What should you know about gout joint pain?

Gout is caused by urate crystals collecting around a joint. An attack may begin abruptly, sometimes overnight, and the skin over the joint can look red or shiny. The big toe is a common site, although the ankle, knee, foot, wrist, or other joints can be affected. Joint pain has many causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm gout.

A clinician may use the history and examination, blood tests, or fluid from the joint to separate gout from infection and other inflammatory problems.

Rest the affected joint, raise it when comfortable, and use a wrapped cool pack for short periods. Keep pressure off the area and drink normally unless you have been given a fluid restriction. Take only the pain or gout medicines recommended for you; some treatments are unsuitable with kidney disease, ulcers, pregnancy, or certain medicines. Long-term urate-lowering treatment should not be stopped or changed without clinical guidance.

Seek urgent assessment for a hot, swollen joint with fever, chills, rapidly worsening pain, confusion, or feeling very ill, because joint infection can resemble gout. Arrange a GP review for a first attack, repeated attacks, an uncertain diagnosis, or symptoms that do not settle. Prompt review also helps protect joint function and check related health factors.
