Gout in the foot: what to know

Short answer
Gout in the foot can cause sudden severe joint pain, warmth and swelling that make walking difficult, while a new hot joint needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding foot gout
Gout develops when urate crystals provoke inflammation inside a joint. In the foot, the base of the big toe is a familiar site, but the midfoot, ankle or other toe joints can also be involved. During a flare, the skin may look red, the joint can feel hot and even the weight of a bedsheet may hurt. Stiffness can remain after the strongest pain eases. Gout is one possible cause of foot pain and swelling; an injury, skin infection or joint infection may cause similar findings. A clinician can use the story, examination and sometimes testing to separate these possibilities.
Caring for the foot
Rest the foot and raise it when sitting. Use a cold pack wrapped in cloth for brief periods, leaving the skin protected between applications. Choose roomy footwear and avoid pressure over the painful joint. Follow a prescribed flare plan rather than adding or stopping medicines on your own. Drink normally unless a clinician has restricted your fluids. If attacks recur, ask about treatment that lowers urate and protects joints over time. Tell the clinician about kidney problems, other medicines and conditions such as obesity because these details can influence the plan.
When foot pain needs prompt care
Seek urgent assessment for a hot, swollen foot with fever, chills, a wound, spreading redness or feeling faint or unwell. Prompt help is also sensible when you cannot bear weight, the foot changes colour, or pain follows a significant injury. Book an appointment for a first suspected attack, repeated flares, ongoing swelling or hard lumps near a joint. Do not assume every red swollen foot is gout.
Questions to take along
Ask which joint appears affected, whether testing is needed, what pain relief is safe with your health conditions, and how to keep future flares from damaging movement. Note when symptoms started, how quickly they developed and whether you have had ankle swelling or knee symptoms before.

Questions people ask
Can gout affect the ankle or midfoot?
Yes. Gout can involve several foot and ankle joints, not only the base of the big toe.
Should I walk through a gout flare?
Avoid forcing weight-bearing when it increases pain. Rest and seek advice if you cannot walk safely or the diagnosis is not established.
