Gout in a finger: what to know

Gout is an inflammatory arthritis caused by urate crystals collecting in a joint. A finger joint is a recognised site, particularly when gout has affected other joints or has been present for some time. The finger may become red, hot, puffy and difficult to bend. The skin can feel very sensitive, even to light contact. A flare may begin quickly and then settle, while repeated inflammation can limit movement and make everyday gripping uncomfortable. Gout is one possible explanation for finger swelling; infection, injury and other forms of arthritis can look similar, so a clinician may examine the joint and review your history.

Rest the affected finger and keep the hand raised when practical. A wrapped cold pack placed briefly over the joint may ease discomfort; protect the skin and stop if the area becomes numb. Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has advised a fluid restriction. Do not stop or change prescribed gout medicine without medical advice. A clinician can choose treatment for the flare and discuss prevention if attacks recur. Kidney disease and some medicines can affect those choices, so mention your full medication list and any history of Chronic Kidney Disease.

Seek urgent medical assessment for a hot, swollen finger joint with fever, feeling very unwell, spreading redness, a wound or reduced ability to move the finger. Joint infection can require prompt treatment and should not be assumed to be gout. Arrange a routine appointment when this is your first suspected flare, attacks keep returning, a lump remains around the joint, or pain does not settle. A clinician may use examination, blood tests or joint fluid testing to clarify the cause.

Ask whether the finger findings fit gout or another joint problem, whether testing is needed, which medicines are safe with your kidney function, and how to reduce future flares. Tell the clinician when the pain began, whether other joints have swollen, and whether you have had similar episodes.
