What does gout feel like?

People often describe a gout flare as throbbing, burning or intensely tender. The joint may hurt even when resting, and a bedsheet or shoe can feel uncomfortable against the skin. Movement can become difficult because inflammation limits the joint and surrounding tissues feel tight. The area may look red and feel warmer than the other side. A flare can affect the big toe, but ankle, knee, foot and other joints are possible. These sensations can also occur with infection or another inflammatory condition, so feeling alone cannot confirm gout.

Protect the painful joint, avoid pressure from tight footwear, and rest it in a supported position. Use only medicines that have been recommended for you, because kidney disease, ulcers, blood thinners and other conditions can change what is safe. Write down the affected joint, the intensity and timing of pain, any fever, and whether this is your first episode. A clinician may need an examination and testing before choosing treatment.

Get urgent care if a painful hot swollen joint occurs with fever, chills, confusion or a strong feeling of illness. Seek prompt assessment for a first attack, sudden inability to walk or use the joint, rapidly worsening symptoms, or pain that does not respond to your agreed plan. New joint swelling should be evaluated when the cause is uncertain.
