Short answer

Gout is an inflammatory joint condition caused by urate crystals, often producing sudden severe pain, heat, tenderness, and swelling.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What drives gout
Urate crystals cause inflammation in a joint
What a flare feels like
Sudden pain, warmth, tenderness, redness, and swelling

Understanding the condition

Urate is made when the body processes purines and is normally removed through the kidneys. When urate builds up, crystals may settle in a joint and activate inflammation. A flare can affect the big toe, foot, ankle, knee, or another joint. The area may become red, warm, swollen, and sensitive to touch. Symptoms can improve between flares, but quiet periods do not necessarily mean the underlying urate problem has resolved. Kidney disease, some medicines, family history, alcohol, and obesity can influence the risk or management of gout.

Helpful next steps

For a painful flare, rest the joint, raise it when possible, use a cold pack with a cloth barrier, and avoid tight footwear or direct pressure. Follow your prescribed flare plan and check before taking extra pain medicine. If this is your first episode, arrange an assessment because infection, injury, and other arthritis conditions can look similar. Between flares, follow-up can help decide whether preventive treatment and urate monitoring are appropriate for you.

Warning signs

Get urgent medical help if joint swelling comes with fever, chills, spreading redness, pus, or a strong feeling of illness. These features can signal infection rather than a simple gout flare. Seek urgent assessment if you cannot bear weight, the limb becomes cold or numb, or symptoms follow a serious injury. A new severe joint attack deserves medical review even when gout seems familiar.

What to ask

Ask how gout will be confirmed, what to take at the first warning of a flare, whether preventive treatment is suitable, and how your kidney function and current medicines affect the plan.
