Gout causes and symptoms explained

Urate forms as the body processes substances called purines. Gout may develop when the blood contains more urate than the kidneys can remove, allowing crystals to collect around a joint. Kidney disease, family tendency, some medicines, alcohol, and dietary patterns can influence risk. Obesity may also be associated with higher urate levels. A flare often starts quickly, commonly in a toe, foot, ankle, or knee. The joint may become hot, red, swollen, and extremely sensitive. Symptoms can ease after a flare, but recurring inflammation can damage the joint over time.

Rest the affected joint, elevate it, and place a cold pack wrapped in cloth over the area for short intervals. Avoid tight shoes and pressure. Arrange a clinical assessment for a first episode because infection, injury, and other forms of arthritis can cause similar symptoms. A clinician may use the examination, blood tests, imaging, or joint-fluid testing to clarify the cause. Keep a record of when symptoms began, which joints are affected, and any recent medicine or health changes.

Seek urgent medical care for a hot swollen joint with fever, chills, spreading redness, pus, or feeling seriously unwell. Infection can present with joint pain and swelling and requires prompt treatment. Get urgent help if severe pain follows an injury, you cannot bear weight, or the foot or limb becomes numb, cold, or pale. Do not assume a new swollen joint is gout without an assessment.
