What should you know about gout attack symptoms?

Gout is an inflammatory reaction to urate crystals in a joint. A flare may begin quickly and make movement or contact difficult. It often affects one joint at a time, such as the big toe, ankle, knee, or another foot joint, but the pattern varies. These symptoms do not prove gout: infection, injury, and other inflammatory conditions can look similar.

A healthcare professional may ask about previous episodes, recent illness or injury, medicines, and conditions that affect urate removal. Examination and selected tests can help separate gout from other causes.

Rest the painful joint, avoid pressure, and elevate the limb if swelling is present. A cool pack wrapped in cloth can be applied briefly for comfort. Follow the flare plan given by your clinician. Avoid borrowing someone else’s medicine or adding an anti-inflammatory drug without checking safety, especially if you have kidney, stomach, heart, or bleeding concerns.

Seek urgent assessment when a hot swollen joint comes with fever, chills, confusion, feeling very unwell, or redness that is spreading. Arrange prompt care for a first suspected attack, severe pain, or symptoms after an injury. A joint infection needs rapid treatment and cannot be ruled out by appearance alone.
