What should you know about a lump on your neck?

Neck lumps may involve lymph nodes reacting to infection, the thyroid, salivary glands, skin, or a cyst. A persistent lump can need assessment for lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or head and neck cancer. Tenderness, redness, recent illness, mobility, and position provide clues, but none confirms the cause without evaluation. A lump does not mean that the person who notices it has cancer.

Note when you first felt the lump and whether it changes in size or firmness. Tell the clinician about sore throat, dental symptoms, fever, voice change, swallowing problems, or other swellings. Assessment may include examination of the mouth, throat, thyroid, and lymph nodes, followed by ultrasound or other tests. Avoid squeezing the area and do not use leftover antibiotics to test whether it improves.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow liquids, or fast-growing swelling. Seek prompt review if the lump remains, enlarges, feels hard or fixed, or comes with ongoing hoarseness, unexplained weight loss, or night sweats. These warning signs guide urgency, not a cancer diagnosis.

Ask what the lump may be connected to, whether you need an ultrasound, and what would lead to a needle biopsy. Ask how results will be communicated and whether a specialist should see you.
