What should you know about goosefoot bursitis?

Short answer
Goosefoot bursitis is irritation of a small fluid-filled sac on the inner side of the knee, causing localized pain and tenderness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Location
- Inner knee, often below the joint line
- Common triggers
- Stairs, kneeling, running, or friction
- First measures
- Relative rest, cooling, and gradual rehabilitation
Where it occurs
The goosefoot, or pes anserinus, is where three tendons attach to the upper inner shin. A bursa near this attachment helps the tissues glide. Repeated stair climbing, running, kneeling, friction, or altered walking mechanics can irritate it. Pain is usually felt below and inside the knee and may be worse when climbing stairs, rising from a chair, or lying on that side.
Goosefoot bursitis can resemble inner-knee arthritis, tendon irritation, a meniscus problem, or referred pain from the hip or back. Joint swelling is a separate symptom that may point to a different problem, so an examination matters when the diagnosis is uncertain.
Steps that can settle irritation
Reduce the activity that provokes pain for a short period without keeping the knee completely still. Use a wrapped cold pack after activity, choose supportive footwear, and return to walking gradually. A physiotherapist can assess hip, thigh, and foot control and prescribe exercises that improve strength and movement without repeatedly compressing the tender area.
A clinician may discuss anti-inflammatory medication if it is suitable for your stomach, kidneys, other medicines, and health history. Persistent symptoms may lead to consideration of a cortisone injection or fluid sampling when another diagnosis needs to be excluded. Do not inject or aspirate the area yourself.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt assessment for a hot or rapidly swollen knee, fever, an open wound, inability to bear weight, or pain after a significant injury. Seek review if symptoms continue despite reducing aggravating activity, disturb sleep, or cause progressive loss of movement. These features can signal infection, internal knee injury, or another condition rather than uncomplicated bursitis.
Questions for your clinician
Ask which structure is painful, whether your walking pattern or hip strength is contributing, and which exercises are appropriate now. You can also ask when medication, injection, imaging, or aspiration would add useful information.

Questions people ask
Is goosefoot bursitis the same as knee arthritis?
No. Both can cause inner-knee pain, but they affect different tissues and require assessment when symptoms overlap.
Can exercise help goosefoot bursitis?
Appropriately graded strengthening and movement work can help, while exercises that repeatedly aggravate the area should be modified.
