Gooey discharge from the eye: what it can mean

Clear, stringy discharge with itching may occur with [Allergic Conjunctivitis](/conditions/allergic-conjunctivitis/). Sticky yellow or green discharge with redness and eyelid crusting can occur with [Conjunctivitis](/conditions/conjunctivitis/), although symptoms overlap. A foreign body, dry eye, blocked tear drainage, or contact-lens irritation can also cause discharge. Discharge alone cannot identify the cause.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye. Use clean water and a fresh cotton pad or clean cloth to wipe discharge from the inner corner outward; use a separate pad for each eye. Do not share towels, pillows, cosmetics, or eye drops. Stop wearing contact lenses until symptoms have cleared and discard disposable lenses or eye makeup used during the episode. Lubricating drops may soothe irritation, but ask a pharmacist if you are unsure which product is suitable.

Seek urgent assessment for severe eye pain, reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, injury, a chemical splash, or a contact lens associated with significant redness. Arrange medical advice if discharge is heavy, symptoms are worsening, the eyelids are very swollen, or the problem is not settling. A clinician can examine the surface of the eye and decide whether treatment is needed.
