What should you know about golf turf toe?

Short answer
Golf turf toe is a sprain of the big toe joint and its supporting tissues, often caused when the toe bends sharply upward while the foot is fixed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Joint involved
- The big toe, or first metatarsophalangeal joint
- Typical mechanism
- The toe bends upward while the foot stays planted
- Main protection
- Supportive footwear and reduced painful motion
What is injured
The big toe joint helps you push off when walking and swinging. A sudden upward bend can stretch the joint capsule, plantar plate, ligaments, or nearby tendon tissues. Toe Pain, tenderness under the joint, swelling, bruising, and difficulty pushing off may follow. The injury can be mild or more involved, and a direct examination is needed to judge stability.
Pain that gradually limits toe movement can have another cause, such as Hallux Rigidus. A clinician may check alignment and movement and consider imaging when a fracture or more serious sprain is possible.
Protect the toe
Stop golf if push-off or the swing hurts. Wear a supportive shoe with a firm sole, elevate the foot when resting, and apply a wrapped cool pack for short periods. Avoid forcing the toe upward or repeatedly testing it. Splinting or taping may limit painful motion when recommended by a clinician. Physiotherapy can later address toe control, calf strength, balance, and a gradual return to walking and golf.
When to seek care
Seek prompt assessment if the toe looks crooked, becomes numb or pale, swells quickly, or cannot bear weight. Arrange medical review after a strong impact, a cracking sound, or persistent pain under the joint. Urgent care is appropriate when an open wound, severe loss of movement, or worsening redness and warmth develops.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which tissues appear injured, whether an X-ray or other scan is needed, whether taping or Splinting is suitable, and which shoe features can protect the joint. Ask when to begin Physiotherapy and what walking, balance, and push-off tests should come before golf.

Questions people ask
Can you walk with turf toe?
Some people can walk, but painful push-off, limping, or increasing swelling means the toe should be protected and assessed.
Is turf toe the same as a fracture?
No. Turf toe describes a sprain, although a fracture can occur with a similar injury and may need imaging.
