What should you know about golden gout?

Gout is an inflammatory arthritis linked to urate crystal deposits in and around a joint. An attack can begin abruptly, often affecting the big toe, ankle, knee, or another joint. The skin may look red or shiny, and even light contact can hurt. Joint pain and joint swelling can also have other causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm gout.

Kidney disease can affect how the body handles urate, while body weight and other health factors may influence risk. A clinician may review your symptoms, medicines, examination findings, blood tests, or fluid from the joint.

Rest the affected joint, raise the limb when comfortable, and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short periods. Drink normally unless a clinician has given you fluid restrictions. Do not start, stop, or change gout medicine without advice, especially if you have kidney disease or take several medicines. Arrange a review if attacks recur, affect work or sleep, or have not been diagnosed.

Seek urgent medical assessment for a suddenly painful, hot, swollen joint with fever, chills, marked illness, a wound, or rapidly worsening redness.
