What should you know about goitre is caused by?

A goitre is a description of thyroid enlargement rather than a single disease. The gland may enlarge evenly or contain one or more nodules. Its hormone output may be normal, excessive, or reduced, and the same visible finding can arise from different mechanisms.

Hyperthyroidism may bring heat intolerance, sweating, tremor, palpitations, or weight loss. Hypothyroidism may bring tiredness, feeling cold, constipation, or dry skin. Inflammation can cause tenderness, while a nodule may produce no hormone symptoms. A pattern of symptoms helps guide assessment but cannot confirm the cause.

Arrange a GP Consultation for a new or persistent thyroid swelling. The clinician will examine the thyroid and nearby neck structures and ask about symptoms, medicines, family history, and previous thyroid problems.

A Thyroid Function Test checks the blood signals related to thyroid activity. If the gland feels uneven or symptoms suggest pressure, additional imaging or specialist input may be recommended. Take prescribed medicines as directed and avoid self-treating with thyroid or iodine products.

Seek urgent help if swelling causes breathing difficulty, choking, or inability to swallow fluids. Prompt assessment is needed for rapid enlargement, persistent hoarseness, a firm or fixed lump, or swollen neck glands. These features require evaluation and do not by themselves identify the underlying condition.
