What should you know about goitre in men?

The thyroid sits low at the front of the neck and helps regulate the body's energy use. Enlargement can be even across the gland or involve one or more nodules. Thyroid hormone production may be normal, too high, or too low, so the size of the swelling does not by itself show how the gland is working.

Possible causes include thyroid inflammation, autoimmune thyroid disease, iodine imbalance, or nodules. Hyperthyroidism can cause heat intolerance, tremor, sweating, palpitations and weight loss, while hypothyroidism may cause tiredness, feeling cold, constipation and dry skin. These patterns are clues rather than a diagnosis.

Arrange a GP Consultation for a new, enlarging, or persistent swelling. The clinician may feel the thyroid and neck, ask about voice and swallowing changes, and review medicines, family history and symptoms.

A Thyroid Function Test can check hormone signals in the blood. Depending on the examination and results, further imaging or specialist review may be suggested. Do not start iodine or thyroid supplements on your own; the appropriate treatment depends on the underlying finding.

Seek urgent medical help if the swelling makes breathing difficult, causes choking, or rapidly interferes with swallowing. Arrange prompt assessment for a steadily enlarging lump, new hoarseness, neck pain, or swollen glands. A goitre can be non-cancerous, but a new neck swelling still deserves a clinical examination.

Ask whether the whole thyroid or a nodule is enlarged, whether your thyroid hormone levels are normal, and whether you need imaging or specialist review. Mention any palpitations, bowel changes, weight change, swallowing difficulty, voice change, or family history of thyroid disease.
