What should you know about goitre and iodine?

A goitre is an enlarged thyroid gland. Iodine is a building material for thyroid hormones, so too little can affect hormone production and stimulate enlargement. However, thyroid inflammation, nodules, autoimmune conditions and an overactive thyroid can also cause a goitre. Taking extra iodine is not automatically helpful and may disturb thyroid activity in some people. A swelling therefore needs evaluation rather than a supplement decision based on appearance alone.
