What should you know about glute med bursitis?

Short answer
Glute med bursitis describes irritation of a fluid-filled bursa near the outer hip, often causing pain when lying on that side, walking, or climbing stairs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical location
- Tenderness and pain around the outer hip.
- Helpful adjustment
- Reduce direct pressure and repeated movements that provoke pain.
- Assessment
- Similar symptoms can come from tendon, joint, back, or nerve problems.
Understanding the outer-hip pain
A bursa is a small, fluid-filled cushion that reduces friction between moving tissues. Irritation around the gluteus medius and outer hip can cause local tenderness, aching, or sharper pain with side-lying, prolonged walking, stairs, or standing on one leg. The gluteus medius tendon and nearby hip joints can produce similar symptoms, so the phrase bursitis does not by itself confirm the source.
Pain may also spread down the outer thigh. A clinician checks hip movement, strength, gait, tenderness, and the back to separate bursal irritation from tendon, joint, or nerve-related pain.
Ways to reduce irritation
Temporarily reduce side-lying on the painful hip, repeated stairs, deep hip crossing, and activities that cause a flare. Sleep on the other side with a pillow between the knees, or on your back if comfortable. Keep gentle movement within tolerance rather than resting completely.
A clinician may recommend progressive hip strengthening, load changes, and treatment for contributing movement patterns. Anti-inflammatory medication may help some people but is not suitable for everyone; check with a clinician or pharmacist if you have stomach, kidney, heart, pregnancy, or medicine concerns. A cortisone injection may be considered after assessment, while joint aspiration is reserved for selected situations where fluid needs evaluation or removal.
When to seek care
Arrange review if outer-hip pain limits sleep, walking, work, or exercise, or if it keeps returning despite activity changes. Seek urgent care for a hot or very swollen area with fever, sudden severe pain after a fall, inability to bear weight, new weakness, or numbness. Marked joint swelling also deserves prompt assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Is the pain coming from the bursa, gluteal tendon, hip joint, back, or another structure? Which activities should I modify? What strengthening plan is appropriate? Would medication, a cortisone injection, or joint aspiration be relevant in my case?

Questions people ask
Can I sleep on the painful side?
Direct pressure can aggravate outer-hip pain, so try the opposite side with a pillow between the knees or a comfortable back-lying position.
Is a cortisone injection always needed?
No. It may be considered for selected cases after the pain source and other treatment options have been assessed.
