Glass cupping therapy: what to know

A practitioner checks the skin and places smooth cups over selected areas. Suction draws the skin gently into each cup; the cups are then removed after a planned period. The treated area may feel warm or tight and can show round red, purple, or brown marks that fade gradually. Glass cupping is generally dry cupping when the skin is not pierced. It is sometimes chosen for muscular discomfort such as back muscle spasm or upper back pain, but it does not establish or treat the underlying cause.

Tell the practitioner about skin conditions, easy bruising, bleeding problems, pregnancy, and medicines that affect bleeding or healing. The skin should be intact and the equipment handled hygienically. After treatment, keep the area clean, avoid vigorous rubbing, and observe how the skin responds. Cupping should complement assessment and rehabilitation rather than replace care for persistent pain, weakness, or numbness. Stop if the procedure causes sharp pain or burning.

Contact a clinician if a mark becomes increasingly painful, hot, swollen, blistered, or draining, or if you develop fever. Seek prompt advice for widespread bruising, unusual bleeding, or an allergic reaction. Do not use cups over open wounds, infected skin, fresh scars, or areas with reduced sensation unless a qualified clinician specifically advises it. Persistent back or upper-back symptoms also deserve an assessment for causes beyond muscle tension.
