What should you know about giving birth after C-section?

Your maternity team considers the reason for the earlier operation, the type and position of the uterine incision, other uterine surgery, the current placenta and baby position, and your health in this pregnancy. They also consider whether labour starts on its own, whether induction is appropriate, and whether urgent surgical care is immediately available. A planned vaginal birth after caesarean involves monitoring during labour because a previous uterine scar can rarely open. A repeat caesarean avoids labour but remains abdominal surgery with its own recovery and risks.

Raise the previous birth history early and bring the operation record if you have it. Discuss your preferred plan, the circumstances that would change it, pain relief, monitoring, and what happens if labour does not progress. These symptoms need prompt evaluation during pregnancy or after birth, regardless of the planned delivery route.
