GGTP blood test: meaning and next steps

GGTP and GGT refer to the same enzyme: gamma-glutamyl transferase. The laboratory measures it in a blood sample, commonly as part of a group of liver tests. A raised level can signal irritation or altered bile flow, but it can also be influenced by alcohol, medicines, supplements or a recent illness.

The clinician looks for relationships between GGTP, ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin. Symptoms and examination findings add context. For example, yellow eyes or pale stools may make bile flow more relevant, while no symptoms may lead to a planned review rather than immediate treatment. The result must be interpreted using that laboratory’s reference range.

Read the report with a clinician rather than focusing on the GGTP value in isolation. Share all prescribed medicines, over-the-counter products, herbal remedies, alcohol use and recent infections. Continue prescribed medicines unless the prescriber tells you otherwise.
