GGT liver blood test explained

GGT is often included with ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin. It can help clinicians decide whether an abnormal alkaline phosphatase result may be coming from the liver or bile ducts rather than from bone. GGT itself does not measure liver function completely and cannot name a disease.

A raised result may occur with irritation of liver cells, reduced bile flow, alcohol exposure, medicines or supplements. The clinical picture also matters: some people have no symptoms, while others have jaundice, itching, abdominal discomfort or nausea. One result is interpreted alongside the laboratory range and earlier tests.

Ask the testing centre whether fasting or other preparation is required, and follow its instructions. Provide a full list of medicines, supplements and recent illnesses. Do not change treatment simply because an enzyme is outside the reference range.

After testing, a clinician may compare the liver panel with previous results, repeat it or arrange an ultrasound. Further assessment is guided by the pattern, your examination and risk factors. Bring the report to the appointment so the exact values and reference ranges can be reviewed together.

Arrange prompt review for yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, pale stools, persistent itching with jaundice, worsening pain in the upper right abdomen or ongoing vomiting. Seek emergency help for confusion, vomiting blood, black stools or marked sleepiness.

Ask how GGT fits with ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin. Find out whether the pattern suggests bile duct assessment, whether imaging is needed, and when the panel should be repeated. Mention any new symptoms rather than waiting for the next blood test.
