What should you know about a high GGT blood test?

GGT, or gamma-glutamyl transferase, is an enzyme found mainly in the liver and bile ducts. A blood test may be ordered as part of liver testing or after another liver enzyme result is outside its usual range. The result is a clue rather than a diagnosis, and the meaning depends on the laboratory range, your other blood results and your health history.

Possible explanations include fatty liver disease, inflammation of the liver, a blocked or irritated bile duct, or regular alcohol exposure. Some medicines and supplements can also affect liver enzymes. GGT may rise with several different liver or bile-duct problems, so the result should not be used to label a condition on its own.

Your clinician may compare GGT with alkaline phosphatase, ALT, AST and bilirubin. The pattern across these results can help show whether further assessment should focus on the liver, bile flow or another explanation. An isolated GGT rise can have a different meaning from a rise accompanied by several abnormal liver tests.

Arrange a follow-up with the clinician who requested the test and take a list of every medicine, supplement and herbal product you use. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Be ready to describe alcohol use, recent illness, abdominal symptoms and any previous liver results.

Depending on the pattern, your clinician may repeat the blood tests, review possible triggers, request additional tests or arrange an ultrasound. Until you receive personalised advice, avoid adding non-essential supplements and follow any instructions given about alcohol. A repeat test is interpreted alongside the reason it was ordered, not as a standalone verdict.

Seek urgent medical help if a high GGT result is accompanied by yellowing of the skin or eyes, very dark urine, unusually pale stools, severe or worsening pain in the upper abdomen, persistent vomiting, fever with abdominal pain, marked drowsiness or confusion. These symptoms can indicate a problem needing prompt assessment and are not explained by the GGT number alone.
