GGT blood test: what the result means

Gamma-glutamyl transferase, often shortened to GGT, is found in several tissues, with a useful signal coming from the liver and bile ducts. A blood sample shows the amount circulating at that time. A raised result can occur when liver cells or bile flow are affected, but it does not identify one specific diagnosis by itself.

Clinicians usually read GGT beside enzymes such as ALT, AST and alkaline phosphatase, plus symptoms, medicines and medical history. Alcohol exposure, some medicines and problems affecting the liver or bile ducts can influence the result. A normal result also cannot assess every aspect of liver health.

Check whether the laboratory gave a reference range, because interpretation depends on the method used and personal factors. Tell the clinician about prescribed medicines, supplements, alcohol use and any previous liver or gallbladder problems. Do not stop a medicine without advice.

Depending on the pattern, a clinician may repeat the blood test, review other liver tests or arrange imaging such as an ultrasound. The purpose is to look for a pattern and decide whether further assessment is needed, rather than to diagnose from GGT alone.

Arrange timely medical advice for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, unusually pale stools, persistent vomiting, increasing abdominal swelling or pain under the right ribs. Seek urgent care for confusion, severe drowsiness, vomiting blood or black stools. These symptoms need assessment regardless of the GGT value.

Ask which part of the liver panel prompted the test, whether your result is outside the laboratory range, and how it compares with earlier results. You can also ask whether a medicine, supplement or alcohol may be relevant, whether repeat testing is needed, and which symptoms should prompt earlier review.
