Getting pins and needles in your hands: what should you know?

Short answer
Pins and needles in the hands can follow temporary pressure, but recurring, persistent or one-sided symptoms need medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Brief episodes
- Often follow pressure or a position and settle after movement.
- Urgent pattern
- Sudden one-sided symptoms with speech, face or balance changes.
What hand tingling may mean
A brief prickling feeling after leaning on an arm often settles when pressure is removed. Ongoing or repeated symptoms can reflect nerve compression at the wrist or neck, peripheral neuropathy, type 2 diabetes, vitamin B12 deficiency or an underactive thyroid. Anxiety and panic can also change breathing and cause tingling, especially around the mouth or in both hands. The pattern, duration, spread and any weakness matter more than the sensation alone.
What to do next
Notice whether symptoms follow a position, repetitive hand use, breathing changes, meals or a medicine. Loosen anything tight, change position and avoid resting your weight on the affected arm. Do not drive or use machinery if numbness affects grip or control. Arrange a GP review for persistent or recurrent tingling; assessment may include an examination and blood tests guided by your history.
When to seek care
Call emergency services for sudden numbness or weakness affecting one side, facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe dizziness or a sudden severe headache, as these can be signs of stroke or a transient ischaemic attack. Seek urgent help for rapidly worsening weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe neck pain after injury. Otherwise, book a clinical review if symptoms keep returning or interfere with sleep, work or handling objects.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the distribution suggests a nerve problem, whether diabetes, thyroid function or vitamin levels should be checked, and which activities or medicines might be contributing. Describe exactly when the sensation begins and ends.

Questions people ask
Can anxiety cause pins and needles in both hands?
Yes. Anxiety or panic can alter breathing and produce tingling, but repeated symptoms should still be assessed if the cause is unclear.
When should I arrange a GP appointment?
Arrange one when tingling persists, recurs, spreads, affects grip or occurs with weakness, pain or balance changes.
