How to get rid of PIH

Short answer
To get rid of PIH, protect the area from light, control the original inflammation, and use a gentle fading plan.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main protection
- Reduce light exposure and use sunscreen
- First priority
- Stop the inflammation that caused new marks
- Avoid
- Picking and abrasive treatment
What PIH means
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a darker mark left after a pimple, rash, scratch, burn, or other irritation settles. It is not the same as an active spot, so squeezing or scrubbing it can prolong the colour change. Marks may look brown, grey, or deeper than the surrounding skin, and their appearance varies with skin tone and the depth of pigment.
The first task is finding and calming the trigger. Recurrent pimples, shaving irritation, or a facial rash can keep creating new marks. Pimples can have several causes; related explanations include Acne, Folliculitis, Hormonal Acne, Perioral Dermatitis, Razor Bumps, and Rosacea.
What to do
Use a mild cleanser, moisturiser, and broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin. Reapply sunscreen when outdoors, and use shade or a hat when practical. Avoid picking, abrasive scrubs, harsh peels, and untested lightening mixtures. A clinician may recommend a pigment-targeting medicine or a procedure after checking your skin and the cause of the inflammation. LED Light Therapy may be discussed when ongoing acne is part of the picture, but it does not replace treatment for the mark itself.
When to seek care
Arrange a dermatology assessment if marks keep multiplying, the underlying rash is painful or spreading, or the colour change is not improving with gentle care. Seek prompt medical advice for a rapidly changing spot, bleeding, a persistent sore, marked swelling, or severe pain. A clinician can distinguish PIH from other causes of dark patches and choose treatment that fits your skin.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what triggered the mark, whether active inflammation needs treatment, which ingredients suit your skin, and whether a peel or light-based option is appropriate. Ask how to test a new product, what irritation should prompt a pause, and how progress will be reviewed.

Questions people ask
Can PIH fade on its own?
Some marks gradually become lighter after the trigger has settled, while deeper or repeatedly irritated marks may need professional treatment.
Does scrubbing remove PIH?
No. Friction can irritate skin and encourage more pigment, so gentle cleansing is safer.
