How to get rid of conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the thin covering over the white of the eye and inner eyelids. It can cause redness, watering, itching, a gritty feeling, or sticky discharge. Viruses, bacteria, allergies, and irritants can produce similar-looking eyes, so the right treatment depends on the pattern and examination.

Wash your hands before and after touching your eyes, avoid rubbing, and use a clean warm or cool compress to loosen crusting. Do not share towels, pillows, cosmetics, or eye drops. Pause contact lenses until the eye is comfortable and a clinician says they are suitable again. Lubricating drops may ease irritation; ask a pharmacist which option fits you. Antibiotic treatment helps some bacterial infections but does not treat viral or allergic causes, so avoid using leftover drops.

Arrange prompt medical care for significant eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling, injury, or symptoms in a contact-lens wearer. Seek urgent help if the eye becomes very painful or vision changes suddenly. An assessment can distinguish conjunctivitis from deeper eye problems and guide treatment.
