German helmet radiotherapy

The phrase may describe a rigid or moulded mask made to fit the head and face. It helps keep the same position during planning and each treatment session, so the radiation team can target the intended area while limiting exposure to nearby healthy tissue. The mask is not itself radioactive and does not treat cancer alone. The equipment and technique vary according to the body area, treatment aim and machine used. Radiotherapy may be directed at conditions such as brain tumour, glioblastoma, head and neck cancer, or selected cancers elsewhere in the body.

During planning, imaging is used to map the treatment area and create a dose plan. The mask may feel close-fitting, but you can usually communicate with the team. Tell staff about claustrophobia, breathing difficulty, neck pain, skin problems or trouble lying flat before the mask is made. Ask how long each visit lasts, whether you need help travelling home, and which skin or hair changes to expect. Do not alter or remove the mask without guidance.

Contact the radiotherapy team promptly for worsening headache, new weakness, confusion, seizures, repeated vomiting, breathing difficulty, or a skin reaction that becomes painful, blistered or wet. Seek emergency help for sudden neurological changes, loss of consciousness or severe breathing problems. These symptoms can have causes other than radiotherapy, but they need timely assessment.
