GERD over-the-counter medication

Short answer
Over-the-counter medicines may ease occasional GERD symptoms, but repeated or severe reflux needs a tailored medical review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How these medicines differ
Some non-prescription products neutralise acid for short-lived relief. Others form a barrier over stomach contents or reduce the amount of acid released. The right choice depends on how often symptoms occur, how quickly relief is needed and your health history.
Reflux can also cause cough, chest tightness, abdominal discomfort or difficulty sleeping. These symptoms should not automatically be attributed to GERD, particularly when they are new or severe.
Use medicines carefully
Read the label, follow the stated dose and check with a pharmacist if you take regular medicines, have kidney problems or are pregnant. Keep doses of some products separate from other medicines when advised. Combine medicine advice with smaller meals, staying upright after eating and avoiding known triggers.
If you need non-prescription treatment repeatedly, book a medical review rather than extending self-treatment indefinitely.
Get help promptly
Emergency assessment is needed for severe chest tightness with breathlessness, sweating, fainting or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Seek prompt care for vomiting blood, black stools, food sticking, painful swallowing, repeated vomiting or unexplained weight loss.
Useful questions
Which non-prescription option is appropriate for me? Could it interact with my regular medicines? How long is self-treatment reasonable? Do my symptoms suggest another condition?

Questions people ask
Can I use these medicines every day?
Regular use should be discussed with a pharmacist or clinician, because recurring symptoms may need diagnosis and a planned treatment approach.
What lifestyle steps support relief?
Smaller meals, remaining upright after eating and avoiding your own triggers can support symptom control alongside appropriate medicine.
