GERD and headache: what to know

GERD commonly causes heartburn, regurgitation, throat irritation or cough rather than headache. Head pain occurring at the same time may reflect dehydration, poor sleep, heat exhaustion, anxiety, a common cold, COVID-19, allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis. Dengue fever can also cause headache, especially with fever, aches, nausea or rash, and needs medical advice in the right setting. The timing of two symptoms does not prove that one caused the other. A clinician can consider medicines, hydration, infection and other patterns.

Write down when the headache starts, where it hurts, how severe it feels, how long it lasts, and whether light, movement, meals, sleep or heat affect it. Drink fluids regularly and rest in a cool, quiet place. Do not exceed the label directions for pain medicine, and ask a pharmacist if you have reflux or take other medicines. If headaches recur, change, or accompany frequent reflux, arrange a review.

Seek emergency help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, fainting, seizure, stiff neck, vision loss, or repeated vomiting. Prompt medical advice is needed for headache with fever, rash, bleeding, severe dehydration, or recent mosquito exposure in a dengue-risk area. These warning signs deserve attention even when reflux is also present.
