Can GERD cause cold hands and feet?

Reflux may leave you uncomfortable, but it does not usually reduce blood flow to the hands and feet. Coldness can occur after exposure to a cool environment, with stress, or when the body is not circulating blood normally. Anaemia and iron deficiency anaemia may present with tiredness, paleness, breathlessness or cold hands and feet. Hypothyroidism can slow body processes and cause cold sensitivity, dry skin or constipation. Peripheral arterial disease may cause leg pain with walking, colour change or slow-healing wounds. One-sided symptoms, numbness or marked colour change need prompt review.

Notice whether both sides are affected and whether symptoms improve with warmth or movement. Keep hands and feet warm, avoid direct heat that could burn numb skin, and avoid smoking. Arrange a medical review if coldness persists, worsens, or comes with fatigue, dizziness, pain when walking, numbness or skin changes. A clinician may examine pulses and skin and consider blood tests. Do not start iron supplementation without advice, because the cause of low iron should be established first.

Seek urgent help for a suddenly cold, pale, blue or painful limb, new weakness, loss of sensation, or a wound that becomes rapidly worse. Emergency care is needed for cold hands or feet with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting or confusion. These signs are not explained safely by GERD alone.
