Short answer

Cold feet and hands may result from cool surroundings, narrowed blood vessels, anaemia, thyroid disease, or reduced arterial blood flow.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common trigger
Cold exposure can narrow skin blood vessels.
Useful clue
One-sided symptoms or walking pain need assessment.

What the symptom can mean

The body naturally narrows small blood vessels in the skin to conserve heat, so fingers, toes, and the nose can feel cool before the rest of you. Persistent symptoms may also occur with anaemia, iron deficiency, or an underactive thyroid; these conditions can be accompanied by tiredness, pale skin, breathlessness, weight change, or feeling unusually cold. Peripheral arterial disease can reduce blood delivery to a leg or foot, particularly when one side is affected or walking brings pain. A cold sensation alone does not identify its cause.

What you can do now

Warm your hands and feet gradually with dry layers, socks, gloves, and movement. Avoid placing numb skin directly against a very hot surface because reduced sensation can hide a burn. Note whether symptoms follow cold exposure, affect both sides, or persist indoors, and record associated colour changes, pain, numbness, sores, fatigue, or breathlessness. A clinician may examine pulses and skin and may arrange blood tests when anaemia or thyroid disease is possible. Do not start iron supplementation without advice, because treatment depends on the cause.

When to seek care

Arrange a medical assessment if coldness is persistent, worsening, new without an obvious trigger, or linked with pain, numbness, colour change, weakness, or non-healing skin breaks. Seek urgent help for a suddenly cold, pale or blue limb, severe pain, marked weakness, or loss of feeling. These changes can signal a serious circulation problem and need prompt assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Could my symptoms fit anaemia, thyroid disease, or an arterial circulation problem? Which examination or blood tests are appropriate? Should I review any medicines, smoking, or other circulation risks? What changes should prompt urgent care?
