GERD and feeling unable to breathe

Reflux can irritate the throat and cause coughing, hoarseness, or a tight sensation that feels alarming. It may be more noticeable after eating or when lying flat. However, reflux cannot safely be assumed when someone says they cannot breathe. Airway narrowing, a severe allergy, a heart problem, or another lung condition can cause similar or more dangerous symptoms. The timing, severity, and associated signs help a clinician decide what is happening.

Sit upright, loosen tight clothing, and move away from smoke or other irritants. If you have a prescribed emergency medicine or inhaler, use it according to your personal action plan. Do not eat or drink if swallowing is difficult. Once settled, record what happened, including food, posture, cough, wheeze, and chest symptoms, and arrange medical advice if the episode is new or recurrent.

Call emergency services immediately for severe or sudden breathing difficulty, noisy breathing, blue or grey lips, facial or throat swelling, fainting, confusion, or inability to speak in full sentences. Chest pressure, sweating, nausea, or pain travelling to the arm or jaw also needs emergency assessment. Do not drive yourself if breathing is seriously impaired.
