What should you know about gentle microdermabrasion?

Short answer
Gentle microdermabrasion removes some surface dead skin with controlled abrasion and suction, giving smoother-feeling skin while requiring careful aftercare.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Method
- Surface abrasion with suction
- Common short-term effects
- Pinkness, tightness, or dryness
- Aftercare
- Gentle products and sun protection
What the treatment changes
A handpiece moves across the skin while a microdermabrasion device exfoliates the outer surface and uses suction. The intensity can be adjusted for the body area and skin sensitivity. People may notice temporary pinkness, tightness, dryness, or mild tenderness. The treatment can make rough texture or dull surface scale less noticeable, but it does not remove deep scars, active infection, or every type of pigmentation. It also does not replace diagnosis when a rash or changing mark is present.
Because the barrier is temporarily more reactive, products that were previously comfortable may sting after treatment. A chemical peel is a different exfoliating approach and should not be combined without a clinician's advice.
Before and after the appointment
Tell the provider about eczema, rosacea, acne flares, cold sores, recent sun exposure, easily raised scars, and medicines that affect the skin. Avoid tanning and pause irritating scrubs or active products only as directed. Arrive without makeup or fragranced products. Afterward, cleanse gently, moisturise, use sun protection, and avoid picking, hot showers, swimming, and friction while the skin is sensitive. Follow the clinic's advice before restarting retinoids, acids, or other exfoliants.
When to seek care
Contact the provider if swelling, burning, pain, crusting, blistering, or redness becomes stronger instead of settling. Seek medical assessment for pus, spreading warmth, fever, or a rash that extends beyond the treated area. If darkening or lightening persists, pause further sessions until the skin has been examined.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what concern the treatment is expected to address, what intensity is appropriate, and whether your current skincare or skin condition changes the plan. Ask how to combine it with other exfoliating treatments, what aftercare is required, and which reaction should prompt a review.

Questions people ask
Does gentle microdermabrasion treat deep acne scars?
It mainly affects the skin surface, so deeper scars may need a different assessment and treatment plan.
Can I use strong skincare afterward?
Wait and restart irritating products only according to the provider's instructions because freshly exfoliated skin may sting.
