What should you know about gentamicin injection for UTI?

Gentamicin targets certain bacteria and is usually reserved for situations where a clinician considers an injectable antibiotic appropriate. Urinary burning, frequency, pelvic discomfort or cloudy urine can have different causes, so symptoms alone do not show whether gentamicin will work. A urine assessment may help guide antibiotic choice.

Gentamicin can affect the kidneys and hearing or balance, particularly when the body cannot clear it well. The care team may check kidney function, review other medicines, and monitor treatment when needed. Vaginal discharge, itching or vulval pain can point to a vaginal condition rather than a UTI and may need a different assessment.

Tell the clinician about kidney disease, hearing or balance problems, pregnancy, dehydration, allergies and all medicines, including other antibiotics. Do not use leftover antibiotics or ask for an injection without an examination. If gentamicin is prescribed, attend the planned doses and monitoring, and report reduced urine, ringing in the ears, hearing changes, dizziness or unusual weakness.

Drink fluids according to your clinician's advice, especially if you have another condition that limits fluid intake. Complete the plan given by the treating team and seek review if urinary symptoms do not improve or return.

Seek urgent care for fever with chills, pain in the back or side, vomiting, confusion, faintness, or feeling rapidly worse, as these may indicate a more serious infection. Get prompt medical advice for very little urine, swelling, new hearing loss, ringing in the ears or severe dizziness after treatment. Facial swelling or breathing difficulty needs emergency help.

Ask whether your symptoms and urine findings support an antibiotic, why an injection is being considered, how kidney function will be checked, and which symptoms require urgent review. Ask how vaginal symptoms would change the assessment.
