What should you know about genital spots?

A spot on hair-bearing skin may follow shaving, friction or folliculitis. Acne-like lesions can be tender, while harmless oil glands or other normal variations may be stable and symptom-free. Spots that blister, ulcerate, bleed, form a rough surface or occur with discharge may need assessment for causes beyond acne. Appearance, location and symptoms guide evaluation; a spot does not by itself establish a diagnosis or indicate a sexually transmitted infection.

Wash gently, keep the area dry and avoid squeezing, shaving over the lesion or applying strong acne products to genital tissue. Wear breathable clothing and pause any newly introduced fragranced product. Note when the spots appeared, whether they itch or hurt, and whether they change after shaving or sexual contact. Do not share towels, and avoid sexual contact if lesions are open, painful or have not been diagnosed.

Book an appointment for spots that persist, recur, multiply or change, or for any lump, ulcer, blister or wart-like growth. Seek prompt care for severe pain, fever, rapidly spreading redness, significant swelling or difficulty passing urine. A clinician may inspect the skin and, when appropriate, offer swabs or other tests so treatment matches the cause.
