Genital psoriasis: what to know

Moisture and friction can reduce the silvery scaling seen on elbows or knees. Genital psoriasis may affect the vulva, penis, scrotum, groin crease, or skin between the buttocks. It can sting during washing or sex and may coexist with psoriasis elsewhere, including the scalp or nails. A rash can also result from contact dermatitis, infection, or another inflammatory condition, so appearance alone is not enough for diagnosis.

Wash gently with lukewarm water or a fragrance-free cleanser, pat dry, and choose loose breathable underwear. Reduce rubbing and pause products that burn or trigger the rash. A clinician may prescribe a carefully selected anti-inflammatory treatment; genital skin absorbs medicines readily, so do not transfer a stronger body treatment to this area without advice. Keeping a record of triggers, flares, and treatments can help refine the plan.

Arrange assessment for a first genital rash, repeated flares, persistent redness, or skin that cracks or peels. Seek prompt help for severe pain, pus, blisters, open sores, fever, painful urination, or rapidly spreading inflammation. New joint swelling, prolonged morning stiffness, or nail changes should also be mentioned because psoriasis can involve more than skin.

Ask whether the rash fits genital psoriasis or an infection, which products are safe on the exact site, and how long to try treatment. Discuss sexual comfort, flare triggers, and whether joint or nail symptoms need review.
