What should you know about a Gemini PET scan?

A radiotracer is given before imaging. PET detects where the tracer collects, while CT shows the corresponding organs and tissues. Together, the images can help evaluate a suspected tumour, assess known disease, plan treatment, or check how treatment is working.

Tracer uptake is interpreted rather than read as a diagnosis on its own. Infection, inflammation, healing, and normal activity can also influence an image. Your clinician considers the scan with your history, examination, and other tests.

Follow the centre's instructions about fasting, water, medicines, and physical activity. Tell staff if you have diabetes, are pregnant or breastfeeding, feel unwell, or may struggle to remain still. After injection, rest quietly as directed; movement and recent exertion can affect tracer distribution.

During the scan, lie still while the bed passes through the equipment. Ask staff what to do after the appointment, including fluid advice and any temporary contact precautions.

Contact the centre before the appointment if you cannot follow preparation instructions or your glucose management is uncertain. Seek urgent help after the injection for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, facial swelling, or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Ask what question the scan is intended to answer, whether your medicines need adjustment, when the report will arrive, and what follow-up test may be considered if the images are unclear.
