What should you know about GE Senographe Essential digital mammography?

A digital mammography system records X-ray images electronically so the radiology team can review and adjust the display during interpretation. The breast is placed on the image receptor and compressed for each view. The equipment name identifies a particular system; it cannot predict the result of an individual examination.

The examination may be requested for routine screening or to investigate a change such as a lump, nipple discharge, skin alteration, or focal pain. If an image is difficult to interpret or shows an area needing clarification, the next step might be another mammogram view, ultrasound, or tissue assessment.

Tell the technologist about pregnancy, breastfeeding, implants, recent surgery, or a painful area before imaging begins. Follow the centre's instructions about products on the skin; deodorant and powder can create marks on some images. Wear separate top and bottom garments and allow time for changing and positioning.

The technologist will guide you through each view and ask you to keep still. Compression is brief but can be uncomfortable. If you need a pause or cannot tolerate a position, say so. Ask how the result will reach you and whether a follow-up appointment is already needed.

Do not wait for routine imaging if you notice a new or growing breast lump, bloody nipple discharge, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, or a persistent one-sided change. Seek prompt medical attention for redness with fever, rapidly worsening swelling, or severe pain after an injury.

Ask why this system or examination was selected, whether you need standard or additional views, how implants or dense tissue affect interpretation, when your report will arrive, and who will arrange further assessment if necessary.
