What should you know about a GE PET scan machine?

The machine records signals from a radiotracer that has been taken up by tissues. CT images provide the map that helps locate those signals. This combination can support assessment of lymphoma, cancer of unknown primary, and other situations where doctors need information about tissue activity and anatomy.

The machine does not diagnose cancer by itself. The report is interpreted with your symptoms, examination, previous scans, and laboratory results. Some non-cancerous conditions can also appear active.

You may be asked to avoid food for a period before the appointment while drinking plain water as directed. Tell staff about diabetes, medicines, pregnancy, breastfeeding, recent strenuous exercise, or trouble staying still. After the tracer injection, you usually rest quietly before lying on the scanning bed.

The bed moves through the scanner while images are collected. Staying relaxed and still helps reduce blurring. Follow the centre's instructions after the examination, including advice about fluids and temporary close contact.

Call the centre before travelling if fasting or glucose instructions are unclear, or if you are unwell. Get urgent medical help for fainting, severe shortness of breath, facial swelling, or a rapidly worsening reaction after the injection.
