What should you know about GE mammography?

During a mammogram, each breast is positioned and briefly compressed between plates while images are taken. Compression helps reduce movement and spreads breast tissue so the radiologist can review the image more clearly. The equipment name describes the manufacturer or system; it does not by itself determine what the images show.

Mammography may be used when someone has no symptoms as part of an agreed screening plan, or when a finding such as a lump, nipple change, or unusual discharge needs assessment. An image that needs more review is not the same as a cancer diagnosis; follow-up may include extra mammogram views, ultrasound, or another test.

Tell the imaging team if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have breast implants, or have had recent breast procedures. On the day, avoid deodorant, powder, or lotion on the chest and underarms if your centre advises this, because some products can appear on an image. Wear a two-piece outfit for easier changing.

You will usually stand for the images and need to hold still briefly. Compression can feel firm or uncomfortable, so tell the technologist if positioning is difficult. Ask how and when the report will be shared, and keep any recommended follow-up appointment.

Arrange a clinical review for a new breast lump, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or a persistent change in breast shape, even if a previous mammogram was reassuring. Seek urgent care for severe breast injury, rapidly increasing swelling, fever with redness, or feeling seriously unwell.

Ask whether your appointment is for screening or a symptom, which imaging views are planned, whether your breast density affects the next step, when the report is due, and what further assessment would be recommended if the images are unclear.
